Composting is the controlled biological degradation of organic material. Most people are familiar with the concept of backyard composting, primarily of yard clippings and leaves. Modern-day solid waste composting relies on that same biological process, but through the application of modern technology it is greatly accelerated and capable of handling large amounts of wastes. Composting facilities , both in this country and to a large extent in Europe, currently are handling a large portion of communities' municipal solid waste (MSW).
